A paint brush is a special type of item that can be used to change the colour of a Neopet or Petpet. The first paint brushes were released on May 9, 2000. Within the Neopets community, the act of using a paint brush is called 'painting'. The colour that a Neopet or Petpet becomes after painting depends on which paint brush is used. For example, a Blue Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Blue, while a Scritchy Sketchy Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Sketch. Paint brushes disappear after they are used and, as such, each paint brush can only be used once.
Paint brushes are broadly divided into two groups: those that can be used to paint Neopets and those that can be used to paint Petpets. These groups are mutually exclusive; paint brushes intended for Neopets cannot be used on Petpets, and paint brushes intended for Petpets cannot be used on Neopets. Users can determine which group a paint brush belongs to by examining the name of the paint brush. If the paint brush's name contains the word 'Petpet', then it can only be used on Petpets. If the paint brush's name does not contain the word 'Petpet', then it can only be used on Neopets.
Obtaining a paint brush[edit]
With the exception of a few select paint brushes that are sold at the Hidden Tower, paint brushes cannot be purchase from official Neopian shops. Instead, users must obtain paint brushes by winning them from certain games of chance, such as the Fruit Machine and the Alien Aisha Vending Machine, or by receiving them as part of a Random Event. Paint brushes are also sometimes available as prizes for participating in plots or winning certain contests. On top of that, the Advent Calendar has been known to occasionally give out paint brushes. Users also have a small chance of receiving a paint brush when they redeem a gold key in Key Quest.

Excluding the four starter paint brushes that are included inside of newbie packs, all paint brushes are tradable. This means that paint brushes can be purchased from other users using the Auction House, the Trading Post, or user shops. Because the demand for paint brushes within the Neopets economy is so high, users can often sell their paint brushes for tens of thousands or even millions of neopoints.
Using a paint brush[edit]
To use a paint brush on a Neopet, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Rainbow Pool. At the Rainbow Pool, the user will be shown a picture of each of their Neopets. If the paint brush in the user's inventory can be used on one of displayed Neopets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Neopet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the Submit button to use the paint brush.
To use a paint brush on a Petpet, the user must first attach the Petpet to one of their Neopets. Next, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Petpet Puddle. At the Petpet Puddle, the user will be shown a picture of each Petpet that is attached to one of their Neopets. If the paint brush in the user's inventory can be used on one of displayed Petpets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Petpet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the Paint this Petpet! button to use the paint brush. Petpets that have been zapped by the Petpet Lab Ray cannot be painted.

Trivia[edit]
- In 2002, during the month of May, TNT held a paint brush competition and let users vote on which paint brush they would like to see next. During the first round of this competition, users could vote for one of three new paint brushes: the Baby Paint Brush, the Tartan Paint Brush, or Mystery Island Paint Brush. The Baby Paint Brush received the most votes during this round and was declared the winner on May 15, 2002. During the second round, users could choose between the Tartan Paint Brush, the Mystery Island Paint Brush, and the Pirate Paint Brush. On May 21, 2002, the Pirate Paint Brush was declared the winner after receiving 194,375 votes. Even though the Mystery Island Paint Brush lost both rounds of the paint brush competition, it would still be revamped and released on June 27, 2002.
- There are three colours only available by using a Paint Brush: Royal, Usuki, and Quiguki. These colours are not available through the Rainbow Fountain or the Lab Ray.
- Interestingly, many colours that Neopets can only obtain by using the Lab Ray or the Rainbow Fountain, such as Robot or Clay, are available to Petpets by using paint brushes.

If you have atleast an acre of land to start wildflowers, it might be best to do yourown blend rather than buy a prepared mix that might not be compatible withyour soil type, climate, or resistant to critters that roam your place.
Wildflower seedcomes in all shapes, sizes, and weights. They are measured so manypounds to the acre and so many square feet to the ounce. My two favoritewildflowers for comparison are:
Bluebonnetseed – one ounce covers 78 square feet ~ one acre would need 35 poundsof seed.
Texas Paintbrush - one ounce covers 10,890 square feet ~ one acre only needs ¼ pound(4 oz) of seed!
If you want tomake your own Wildseed mix, figuring out how much of what to put on youryard or lot can be a bit tricky!
The easiest wayto get started is to buy a prepared mix of Wildseed blended by one of thewildflower farms. The closest to what we use and have found to beresistant to deer and drought for the Canyon Lake area of the hill countryis “LadyBird’s Legacy Wildflower Mix” available at Native American Seedin Junction, Texas. All are deer resistant and do well in the HillCountry Canyon Lake area.
Lady Bird's LegacyWildflower Mix for 2014 contains: Texas Bluebonnet, Indian Paintbrush,Prairie Verbena (relative of Moss Verbena), Plains Coreopsis, Indian Blanket,Lemon Mint, Black-Eyed Susan, plus Purple Coneflower, Pink Evening Primrose, and Winecup (relative of Tall Poppy Mallow).
2014 prices are$44 for 1 LB (2000 sq. ft.).
To cover an acreof land, the Lady Bird Mix recommends 20 LB (pounds) which would cost about$880.
We found thatdoing our own mix saved money and we could adjust the amount of this seedor that one each year based on which ones were doing best in our yard.
Our own blendedmix is somewhat as follows (bold does best in our yard):
| WILDFLOWER | Blooms | 1 - 1 1/2 acre | Cost |
| Texas Bluebonnet | March-May | 10 LB | $170 |
| Indian Paintbrush | March-May | 1 oz | $54 |
| Cornflower * | March-may | 2 LB | $20 |
| Tall Poppy Mallow (Standing Winecup) | March-Aug | 2 LB | $60 |
| Moss Verbena | March-Oct | 1 LB | $65 |
| Prairie Verbena ** | March-Oct | 1/4 LB | $38 |
| Golden Wave Coreopsis basilis | April-June | 1 LB | $20 |
| Plains Coreopsis tinctoria | May-Aug | 1 LB | $20 |
| LanceLeaf Coreopsis tickseed | May-July | 2 LB | $40 |
| Indian Blanket | May-July | 3 LB | $60 |
| Lemon HorseMint | May-Oct | 1 LB | $20 |
| Black-Eyed Susan | June-Oct | 1/4 LB | $12 |
| Gloriosa Daisy | June-Oct | 1/4 LB | $13 |
| Total if all are ordered - $23 perpound | 26 LB | $592 |
* Cornflower is a European Native and available at Wildseed Farms.
** Prairie Verbena is only available at Native American Seed and isrelated to Moss Verbena - either one or both will grow.
Mixing 26 poundsof various seed is a major chore, so we've often arrange for the WildseedFarm to do our custom blend each year. We have them divide the blendinto 5 bags of 5+ pounds each which makes it easier to add kitty litterto each one and pour it in the seed spreader.
Notice that WildflowerFarms does not carry Prairie Verbena, so we order that separately fromNative American seed and add it to our blend. Some years, I'll trynew kinds of seed (purchased where ever I can find it) and add it too. Or if something is doing really well (such as blanket flower), we'll putless out the following year since the blooms should have scattered seedin our yard.Wildflower seedgrowers often have a crop failure of a particular seed which means youmight have to look for other sources if you want to include it in yourannual mix. My list of favorite seed suppliers are all from Texasand usually I can find everything we want to include in our mix from oneof them. See Sources below.
COLORS: Bluebonnets now come in several colors. Texas A & M Maroon isnow available in seed and potted plants; a new Lady Bird deep blue is comingon the market. Basic plain seed can produce all kinds of colors asyou can see above. We loved the pink ones and also had a few whiteones (but I forgot to take a picture!).
Mixing them togetherin a yard or wildflower patch is fun, but when they cross-pollinate toproduce next years seed, the odd colors default back to basic blue. This means if you LOVE the maroon color (for instance), then plant or sowall maroon if you want to stay with that color.
INOCULATED: Our main home is near Corpus Christi and we put out a LOT of bluebonnetseed over the years with no success! We finally gave up, until wefigured out what was missing... inoculant!
When we builtour house in the Hill Country, our bluebonnet seed came up.

What happened? Bluebonnets are a legume and need an inoculate (a bacterium) in the soilto thrive. That special inoculate is in much of the Hill Country. It was NOT in South Texas... well, no wonder bluebonnets never liked ourfirst home! The easiest wayto tell if bluebonnet seed will do well is to look around your area...do you see bluebonnets growing nearby in yards, fields or parks? If so, you probably have inoculant in the soil and can put out all thebluebonnet seed you want.
If you do notfind any bluebonnets growing in the area, then you have two choices...buy seed that has been inoculated - we buy ours at Turner Seed (see above)OR buy bluebonnet plants from your local nursery and add them to your landscapeor yard where you'd like bluebonnets to grow. The garden center oneshave inoculant in the potting soil and it should slowly spread where everyou put bluebonnet plants. The next year, you can sow seed in thatsame area and the bluebonnets should sprout.
SCARIFIED: Scarified basically means to nick the hard outer seed coat to help it sproutand most seed you buy will already be scarified... meaning it should germinatethe first year. Any seed produced by those plants will have theirhard coat and may not ALL germinate the next year, but a few years later. This is mother nature's way of protecting seed from harsh conditions, suchas drought. It's also one reason that you should keep sowing bluebonnetseed for a few years after you start your project until the blooms reachwhat I call 'critical mass' - an explosion of Bluebonnets. They shouldthen produce an abundance of blooms each year without your having to sowmore seed.
The photo belowshows Paintbrush in 'Critical Mass' - thick enough to be gorgeous and toproduce plenty of seed for future years. Yes, even Paintbrush cangenerate surprise colors - we loved the white ones tinged with gold.
